On the 2nd of March, the new Women in ESG community – Portugal performed his 1st event at Casa do Impacto. It had a packed room and the presence of the comedian Nuno Markl, the painter Jacqueline de Montaigne and the specialist in ecology and biodiversity, Helena Freitas, to talk about issues of gender equality and biodiversity—an event reported by Expresso newspaper.
This community, founded by three women – Alice Khouri, Filipa Pantaleão and Rita Rendeiro – aims to bring together a group of people with different skills in the areas of ESG (environment, social responsibility and governance) on the same platform.
The idea for this project came from the Brazilian Alice Khouri, who highlighted the following:
- > Efficiency and better management of internal resources are needed to achieve results, and gender equality (in a scenario where we have to accelerate the ESG) is a matter of efficiency!
- > Internal resources must be managed by: calling on all existing capacity and technical competence!
The Women in ESG community list already has 272 women, mainly administrators, directors and technicians of companies with some relation to the ESG area in areas as diverse as engineering, biology, ecology, law and even the arts!
Filipa Pantaleão explained the objectives of this community:
- > Mess with the existing status quo in Portugal and pave the way for sustainability in a multidisciplinary way!
- > Opening up to the corporate world by launching a trio of talks related to ESG, one for each of the letters E, S and G, one letter for each month (April, May and June), with the idea being to understand the what companies are effectively doing, and what difficulties are felt, permanently with gender equality as a backdrop!
Helena Freitas, professor at the Department of Life Sciences at the University of Coimbra and holder of the UNESCO Chair in Biodiversity and Conservation for Sustainable Development, pointed out:
- > ESG are pervading companies and corporations, and a revolution is underway, but there’s still a long way to go regarding ecology and biodiversity!
- > The challenge of the food system is central to the future (in the last 20 years alone, we have attached another 10% of the planet to food production)!
- > It is necessary to align the economy and ecology by assuming the commitment of the last COP to have 30% of land and sea-protected areas!
Jacqueline de Montaigne, the author of Language of Flowers, the mural chosen this year by Street Art Cities as one of the 100 best in the world and the first Portuguese woman nominated for this award, stated that there is still a long way to go to ensure equality between men and women in the art world:
- > Less than 15% are women represented at festivals!
- > Only 30.7% of living artists represented in galleries in Europe and North America are women!
- > Furthermore, a woman did none of the 100 most expensive works sold in the world!
- > A Forbes study calculated that of the $196.6 billion spent at auctions between 2008 and 2019, only 2% of the value was for works of art by women artists!
Our House’s also built of a community of POWERFUL WOMEN! Here we present some examples of Women Founders, Co-founders, CEOs, COO and Impact Startup Promoters, among others, whose work we will continue to highlight and thank…
